Rottweiler History

The Rottweiler is known to be the descendent of the Italian Mastiff. The Rottweiler was used as a herding dog during the middle Ages. The name Rottweiler comes from where the dog was bred, which was Rottweil, a German town in Wuttemberg. The breed had disappeared for a while in the 1800s but has come back around the 20th century. This is due to the efforts of the breeders who admired the breed. The Rottweiler has been around ever since. Their talents include herding and tracking but also work as a police dog and a guard dog.

Rottweilers' Appearance

The Rottweiler is known to be physically massive, with a large powerful frame. The head of the Rottweiler is broad and large and the muzzle is very well developed with a scissor bite. They have an expression of alertness and loyalty in their big dark eyes and carry an expression of goodwill. The ears are triangular and carried forward and the lips and mouth are black in color. The tail of the Rottweiler is usually docked and the dew claws removed.

The coat of the Rottweiler is a short thick coat and comes in either black with brown markings or a red with brown markings. Rottweilers are known to have very large litters with up to around 12 puppies per litter. The two most common types of Rottweilers are American Rotts and German Rotts. The way to distinguish between the two is based on physical characteristics. The German Rottweilers are said to be stockier and have a blockier form than the American variety. The American Rottweilers are seen as longer in form, taller, and not as stocky or blocky.

Rottweiler's Temperament

The Rottweiler is known to be a courageous and devoted dog breed. They are very protective and bright. The Rott is known to be a fierce fighter but also very reliable and can make a wonderful family pet. They are wonderful guard dogs and will protect their family members to the fullest extent. They are steady and confident. They have a very mellow temperament though and because of this, make a pleasant house dog or family pet.

Rottweilers are very large in size and therefore are used for military help and working help. They are loyal companion dogs and with proper training can be a perfect addition to the home. They are very loving, and are calm in nature. Since they are so bright they are easily trainable and reliable as well. They do require an owner that can handle their larger size and will understand and known how to respect the breed. They also need a lot of companionship and attention to be happy, and should be well socialized from a very early age.

Rottweiler's Role

The Rottweiler plays the role of the protective loyal dog. They are known to be good guard dogs and can make wonderful house pets as well. They can work well for a home with small children or a larger family as long as they are well socialized from a very early age. If trained properly they can be a great addition to the home/ workplace.
